FFTO 10 - Oct 2011 - Cinnamon Buns.



This month's Fresh From The Oven challenge was set by Claire from Things We Make.




These buns were amazing and still tasted great 3 days later.  I used the buttery icing.  I wouldn't like to think about the calories in these things but for a treat with a cup of coffee they were brilliant.  I gave some of them to my Dad and he enthused about them next time he saw me.  I can definitely see these becoming a regular feature in our family.  I might just have to get a nice deep round tin I can use to make them next time as the round versions do look nicer than my square one.  



As these are so simple to make, I love the idea of assembling these the night before then leaving the tin in the fridge overnight and baking first thing in the morning.  What a great idea for Christmas morning!  Last Christmas we had the cranberry-oat scones straight into the oven from the freezer from my second FFTO challenge.  Maybe I'll start a tradition of doing FFTO recipes for Christmas morning.

  2. These look amazing! I've become a cinnamon swirl fiend recently too. They look so complicated and are so deceptively simple and perfectly autumnal. But my recipe is a Swedish one where you put each little swirl into a cupcake case and just bake for 5 minutes with some sugar crystals on top - delicious but they definitely don't even keep for 24 hours (shame that! We have to eat them!). Perhaps your icing, and the way they're sandwiched together helps to keep them fresher. Will give it a go this way next time. x

  7. your photos inspire me - perhaps i should try using smaller pan to get taller buns. they look really lovely with the dripping icings!

  12. Maria - I was pleased with how they turned out. Mind you, there are some really beautiful ones from the other FFTO bakes - some works of art!

    Little Macaroon - I like the sound of your ones in individual cases. And I really should have made my ones smaller. I knew they were huge and full of calories but I still had to eat a whole one each time. I'll have to start making things into smaller portions to trick myself into eating less. Nah, I'd probably just have two or three instead of one.

    Sarah - yes, I have seen a lot of them around recently too - but then our weather has been really suited to them recently.

    Sally - I actually did feel like they were the perfect consistency - was very pleased with them. Looking forward to trying your lemon curd version - be good to have both versions up my sleeve!

    Anna - I have had bought ones before and felt they were okay but now I am a convert!

    Hanna - I always do drippy icing. I'm not precise enough to make dainty, pretty things - I just pour the stuff on!

    J - the tall buns did look good but as I was saying above to Little Macaroon - perhaps having such big portions has its disadvantages. :-O

    Jo - I love them now too.

    Jacqueline - this was my first attempt. I hadn't really ever felt I particularly wanted to before so I'm glad Claire challenged us to do them as I have discovered a new favourite.

    Peapod - love your owls! I think this is a good recipe to try if you fancy giving them a go.

    Claire - Thanks for the mention in your round up and for the wonderful recipe in the first place. It must be a good recipe if I can get lovely results on my first try.

  13. The perfect breakfast to wake up to. I still make Nigella's muffins each Christmas morning - but as I'm the only person who eats them, I need to rethink!!!!!

    C - yes, I think they are a bit special for Christmas morning. As long as I have some time to get them done on Christmas Eve.

  16. Great idea to assemble the night before to be able to enjoy freshly warm the following morning- a real breakfast treat. Sadly I ran out of time this month but I'll definately be finding time to make these soon!
