Breakfast Idea Number 2 - Porridge.

It has to be porridge when, to get to work, you have to carry all your stuff up the track wading through thigh deep snow then spend half an hour digging before you can get the car going.  Or, you are at home with the kids and you have to drag the two of them up the hill on their sledge several times.  They just don't understand that Mummy feels old!

Obviously you can do anything you like with porridge.  These are what I have had in the last few days.

Sprinkled with demerara sugar.  The sugar melds together in the moisture to give a lovely caramelised topping.

Chopped apple, sultanas and cinnamon. Mmmm.

Honey and almond.

Banana and chocolate.

Although, my favourite is just plain simple porridge made with honey and salt - the way my Granda used to make it.  Although I very rarely make it properly anymore - a quick blast in the microwave is much more convenient.

Here's another picture of the kids out on the sledge.  Yes the one that the above porridges have fuelled.  Can't wait til they are old enough to pull their poor old mother on the sledge!

  1. Never happens!!!!

I like my porridge with frozen raspberries and golden syrup! I know that this makes no sense but when I eat porridge for breakfast, I can't stop eating all day!!!

  2. Hi. Do you put the frozen rasps in before you microwave it? I'm assuming so. That sounds good and gets around the problem of having to wait for the rasp season.

  3. Ummm porridge, I may have to have that for breakfast tomorrow. Although I'm a bit in love with wholemeal drop scones at the moment, from the river cottage everyday cookbook. xx Pixie xx

  4. Your children are absolutely precious! This is going to be a silly question, but what is the difference between porridge and oatmeal??

  5. No difference. I make my porridge from rolled oats rather than oatmeal but it's all the same thing.

  6. Surely the dog is big enough to pull the kids up the hill? Just attach a harness and throw a ball!

  7. My favourite way of eating porridge is with grates apples. But I just have not made the time in the morning to eat breakfast, rushing out to get the train.

  8. Oh I do love porridge in the morning! Actually, I often have it for lunch at work too - keeps me going all day! And the snow is wonderful but awful all at the same time, isn't it?

  9. Ooh porridge, lovely. Mine always has golden syrup and chopped banana on it. It is the best sort of breakfast especially in thigh high snow!!! Goodness I don't wish I had your journey to work.

  10. I love porridge!! I always used to be so boring with mine...just plain with some brown sugar. Now I've started having it with cinnamon and blueberries...yum! And once again, your boys are sooo freaking cute!! They look like little snow angels, haha!

  11. That's so funny you posted this because I was JUST thinking about how I miss "hot cereal"! I used to eat mine with sugar and syrup with the occasional blueberries. I miss it... I hope it snows tonight so I can enjoy a bowl with nothing but our Christmas lights on watching a Christmas movie- how cozy! Brings me back to my childhood :)
